The Cross

"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden." Matthew 5:14 NIV

When the boys were younger, we drove to the Midwest each summer to visit our families. Heading south on Highway 70 in Illinois, we would see a large steel cross rising high above the plains. While not built on a hill, its 198-foot height is a bold symbol of our Christian faith.

When we accept Christ, we, like that cross, become elevated. Our lives are transformed from the depths of sin, and we are lifted heavenward toward God's righteousness. This change is only possible because of what happened at the cross. Our sins have been forgiven through Christ's sacrifice, and we are filled with the Holy Spirit.

Transformed, the light of Christ shines through us. It's not to be put away or covered up but allowed to shine boldly. Its light rises high above the plains below so all may see. Those who knew us before will recognize we are no longer that person. Others will realize there is a difference, something that sets us apart from the world.

God, thank you for the hope that is found at the cross. As a changed people, let us stand boldly and openly share the message of your grace and love. Help us to live righteously, so we do not diminish the glory of your light. In Christ Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
