The "If"

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." —1 John 1:9 (NIV)

Sometimes the smallest words carry the greatest weight. “If” is one of them. In this verse, “if” doesn’t threaten—it invites. It opens the door to restoration, not through perfection, but through confession.

God’s response to our confession is threefold:

  • Faithful: He does not waver. His forgiveness is not a gamble—it’s a promise.

  • Just: Not in the sense of cold judgment, but in divine integrity. His justice includes mercy, because the debt has already been paid through Christ.

  • Purifying: God doesn’t just wipe the slate clean; He restores our spiritual balance, realigning us with His righteousness.

But this divine response is not automatic—it begins with our posture before God. Confession isn’t about ritual—it’s about restoring relationship with the One who welcomes us back.

  • We acknowledge God’s holiness.

  • We acknowledge our sin.

  • We humble ourselves, stepping out of self-justification and self-defense.

  • We approach God earnestly, trusting His character more than our shame.

Let today’s “if” invite you. Confession isn’t a punishment—it’s a pathway. Speak honestly. God’s faithfulness meets us not at our best, but at our most honest. And His justice? It’s the kind that heals.

Faithful and Just God,

We come not hiding but in hope.

We confess what weighs us down, trusting that You lift us up.

Purify us—not just from what we’ve done, but into who You call us to be.

Restore our balance, renew our hearts, and remind us that Your mercy is always more.

Amen.

Peace & Grace,

Pastor Tim
