The Quiet Room

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.” —Matthew 6:6 (NIV)

Ash Wednesday invites us to slow down and listen for God beneath all the noise. Jesus doesn’t begin with grand gestures or public displays. He begins with a door closing behind us—a quiet place where nothing needs to be performed or proven.

In a world that rewards visibility, Jesus points us toward hiddenness. Not secrecy for its own sake, but a space where our hearts can breathe. When we step into that quiet room—whether it’s a literal space or a moment of stillness—we remember that God meets us in truth, not polish.

Lent isn’t about impressing God. It’s about letting God meet us where we truly are — in our joy, in our sorrow, and in our brokenness.

Today, take a few minutes to “close the door.” Let the noise settle. Let the masks fall. Offer God whatever is true in you—your weariness, your hope, your longing to begin again. Trust that the One who sees in secret is already drawing near.

Holy God, draw me into the quiet places where Your mercy can reach me. Help me set aside the need to be seen and teach me to rest in Your presence. Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. Amen.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Tim
