“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.’” Psalms 91:1-2 (NKJV)
Do you have a favorite place to withdraw? A place where you can escape when life becomes chaotic? It might be a cottage near the ocean or a tent in the woods. Whatever and wherever it is, it offers serenity and safety—a shelter from the noise and demands of life.
The author speaks of a secret place in today's passage, but it is not a physical location. It is a spiritual dwelling belonging to God. The psalmist begins with “He,” extending an invitation and proclaiming a promise for all who choose to dwell in God’s presence. This universal truth reminds us that whoever seeks refuge in Him will find not only safety but also intimacy. If you are in the shadow of something, you must be near it.
The author then transitions to “I,” turning the promise into a personal testimony. They aren’t merely declaring a truth for others—they embrace it wholeheartedly for themselves. Their confidence stems from experience; they have been to this secret place. They have felt the living shelter of the Most High.
How does this apply to us today? Finding this secret place starts by seeking moments of stillness with God. It might be through a quiet prayer as you wake, a pause to reflect on His goodness during your commute, or a walk in nature where you sense His presence. These simple acts of dwelling in His nearness bring us into the sacred shadow of the Almighty, where we can find not only protection but also peace and renewal.
The psalmist reminds us that this secret place is closer than we think. It’s not just an invitation for some—it’s for all who trust Him. May this passage inspire you to seek intimacy with God, to rest in His refuge, and to confidently declare, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the promise of Your secret place where we can find safety, peace, and intimacy with You. Teach us to seek You in stillness, to trust in Your presence, and to abide under the shadow of Your wings. Help us to carry the refuge of Your love into every moment of our lives, and may our hearts echo the psalmist’s declaration: “You are my refuge and my fortress; my God, in You I trust.”
Amid life’s chaos, may we draw closer to You and let our lives testify to Your faithfulness and care. We surrender all our fears and burdens to You, knowing we are safe in Your hands.
In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
