The Straight Path

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” — Proverbs 3:5–6 (NRSVUE)

Earlier this week, I listened to a podcast about AI Agents. If you’re not familiar, they're like a personal assistant that frees you from menial tasks. For example, if you want to order lunch, you can tell them what you want, and they will suggest places that might satisfy that craving, then take your response, place your order, arrange delivery, and make payment.

Of course, in order to use the agents, you have to share your personal data: name, address, telephone number, credit card — whatever is needed to complete the task. Though we know there are risks involved — data breaches, misuse of information, even systems behaving unpredictably — we may still be tempted to trust them because they’re convenient, fast, and predictable.

But when God invites us to trust — not with our passwords, but with our lives — we often hesitate.

Proverbs 3:5–6 calls us to a different kind of trust. Not partial trust. Not convenience trust. Whole‑heart trust. The kind of trust that doesn’t rely on our insight, our control, or our carefully engineered systems.

AI agents operate on commands. God invites us into relationship.

AI promises efficiency. God promises faithfulness.

AI can make our paths easier. God can make our paths straight.

And here’s the irony: we willingly trust human‑made systems we know can fail, glitch, or be breached—yet we struggle to trust the One who has never failed us, never lost us, never abandoned us.

The proverb reminds us that trust in God isn’t about outsourcing tasks; it’s about surrendering direction. It’s about acknowledging God in all our ways — not just the convenient ones — and letting God shape the path we walk.

We trust technology because it feels predictable.

We trust God because He is faithful.

The invitation to us is simple: trust the One who makes paths straight when every other system can only make them easier.

Lord, teach me to trust You with my whole heart. Where I cling to my own understanding, loosen my grip. Where I rely on human‑made systems for ease, comfort, or control, turn my eyes back to You. Make my path straight, and help me walk it with confidence in Your faithfulness. Amen.

Grace & Peace, Pastor Tim
