Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6 NRSV
In the next few days, I'll drive to Indiana, a trip I've made many times. Twenty years ago, I would have gotten a TripTik from AAA and followed their suggested route. There are a couple of ways I can take to my destination, up north across Lake Erie and down, or I80 straight across the middle of Pennsylvania. Since the advent of GPS, I have chosen their best route based on time.
Our spiritual destination has a single way: through Jesus Christ. We are all on the same road, heading in the same direction. It's impossible to arrive where we are going, driving in the opposite direction.
However, our journeys will not be the same. We all start from different places and experience various detours. The unexpected happens. Sometimes God redirects our routes intentionally; there's something he wants us to encounter. At other times we pull off intentionally and become lost. When this happens, our spiritual GPS (God-Provided Spirit) guides us back on the correct route.
There may be folks driving on the right road and arriving near the destination but not at the destination. Good folks who are living good wholesome, law-abiding lives, but they're not going to see the Father except through the Son. That's unconditional.
God desires that all should believe in Jesus and find eternal life (Jn 6:40), but it's each person's decision upon hearing the word which road they will follow. But, they must first hear the word and know the way. That is why it is so essential that we share the good news of salvation that comes through Jesus Christ. (Rm 10:14-15)
Loving Father, thank you for the salvation offered through Jesus Christ. Help us to be ever mindful of our destination and the route we are on. May we be obedient when you reroute us and though not fully understanding, give thanks. When we become lost, may we listen to the Holy Spirit. Grant us the boldness and courage to share your good news with others on this journey but unsure of the destination and those who are yet to begin the trip. We pray this in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
