The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it; for he has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers. Psalms 24:1-2 NRSV
Usually, our prayer list for the church has ebb and flow–new things are added, and as prayers are answered, they are removed from the list. Sometimes though, the requests come in tidal waves. This has been one of those weeks as our friends and family undergo consultations and treatments.
As Christians, we are confident that whatever the situation, God answers prayer. He who bought order from chaos, and spoke into existence, all that exists, continues to reign over heaven and earth, and His care for us–his beloved children–will never stop.
We know this is true because he tells us repeatedly in the Bible.
Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God's sight. But even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. Luke 12:6-7
Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 NRSV
Whatever we are facing right now, God has us in his hands–the same hands that formed us also guide us. The encouragement found in that simple song learned as children serve as a reminder of his compassion and love.
He's got the whole world in his hands,
He's got the whole world in his hands,
He's got the whole world in his hands,
He's got the whole world in his hands.
We can replace "the whole world" with whatever we are facing. He's got "my financial worries," "my sickness," and "my job stress"–whatever the situation, it's in his hands.
Almighty Father, we thank you for holding us in your hands in every circumstance of our life. We have no reason to fear because of your love. We are turning everything over to you now–all our worries and anxieties–we trust you to answer our prayers. Whenever we don't understand your answer or timing, please help us to continue in faith, looking to you for comfort and strength. In Christ Jesus, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
