Treasured Things

Writer: timothyrsoutherntimothyrsouthern

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Psalms 119:11 NIV

If you have lived in the same place for a while, you have stored a lot of stuff. Among all those things, some have likely been used only once, some not at all, and others we fail to remember why we have them at all. But among all those items are some treasures, sentimental things that were gifts, or simply something we use regularly.

Psalm 119 is a beautiful and passionate poem about the author’s relationship with the word of God. He wanted to seek God wholeheartedly and treasured God’s instruction so he might not sin. We do not know the state of his earthly house, he might have been storing many unused items, but the author is clear about what he cherished in his spiritual home.

Like in our homes, in our hearts, we can save many unnecessary things that impede our relationship with God. But his word, of all our possessions, should be right up front in a prominent, easy-to-access place. As our life manual for avoiding sin and pleasing God, we should use it frequently. Also, as we read and study scriptures, its size will grow. This may mean doing some decluttering to make room!

God, thank you for your word, your promise to us. You show us hope, love, discipline, and salvation in the divine scriptures. In them, we see how we are to live our lives, showing mercy, justice, charity, and compassion to others. Please help us as we read and study the scripture to store its contents as treasured possessions in our hearts and follow its instructions. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
