Treasured Things

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. - Matthew 6:21 (NIV)

What do we hold dear in our hearts? That is the question Jesus asks in today's verse. Do we crave success and achievement, recognition and respect, security and stability, or something else? Does our treasure fill us with lust and preoccupation, pushing everything else aside?

Individually, none of these desires are inherently evil. We all have goals; we seek respect and strive to meet our physical needs. However, when these desires consume us entirely and dominate our hearts, they become unhealthy.

As we enter the busyness of the Christmas season, it's easy to become distracted. Our preoccupation may be with decorating, shopping, and planning what to serve at Christmas dinner while we overlook the true meaning behind the season—the coming of Christ our King, Jesus.

In the two prior verses, Jesus tells us, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (v. 19-20)

Jesus urges us to focus on eternal, spiritual treasures rather than fleeting earthly ones. By prioritizing heavenly treasures—such as love, compassion, and faith—we align our hearts with what truly matters, ensuring that our lives are anchored in what is eternal and unshakable.

Reflecting on Jesus' words, we are called to evaluate our priorities and reorient our lives toward the spiritual. Instead of becoming consumed by pursuing worldly achievements and possessions, we are encouraged to invest in eternal treasures—acts of kindness, love, and faith. By doing so, we enrich our lives and contribute positively to the world around us.

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your guidance and wisdom. Help us to discern what we truly treasure and to align our desires with Your will. May we prioritize eternal values over fleeting earthly gains, and may our hearts be filled with love, compassion, and faith. Strengthen us to live in a way that reflects Your kingdom, bringing glory to Your name. We pray for Your grace to navigate life's challenges, always keeping our eyes fixed on the treasures of heaven. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
