Walking in the Light

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Joshua 1:8 (NIV)

There are two books that I’ve found so insightful that I try to read them every couple of years: When Bad Things Happen to Good People by Rabbi Harold Kushner and Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. If you haven’t read them, I highly recommend them. Kushner reflects on the experience of losing his young son and how God helped him through the struggle and doubt. Lewis tells the story of his conversion from atheism to Christianity. But as much as I love these two books and as profound as I find them, they pale in comparison to the Bible.

Unlike any other book, the Bible holds divine truths illuminating our lives. It is more than a collection of stories; it is a living guide—a roadmap for our journey through faith, adversity, and triumph. As we delve into its pages, we discover narratives of both caution and courage, revealing the human struggle to remain faithful to God.

Consider the lives of Saul and Judas, anointed individuals who tragically lost their way. Their stories serve as warnings, urging us to stay close to God’s precepts. But there are also heroes like Moses, Job, and David who stood firm, even when faced with opposition. Their unwavering faith reminds us that God’s promises endure, even in the darkest moments.

God’s law isn’t a mere set of rules; it’s a blueprint for abundant living. It teaches us compassion, generosity, thoughtfulness, and love. Whether we steward the earth’s resources or care for one another, the principles within the Bible guide our actions. We find purpose in following God’s ways, knowing they lead to fulfillment and blessing.

After Moses’ passing, Joshua stepped into leadership and felt the weight of responsibility. Yet God assured him: “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you.” These words echo through time, reaching us today. When we face uncertainty, God remains steadfast. His promise—to never leave or forsake us—holds true.

God also imparted Joshua with practical advice for success: “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night.” Imagine the impact of saturating our hearts and minds with Scripture! It’s not enough to possess a Bible; we must engage with it prayerfully. In life’s twists and turns, the sacred text becomes our compass, guiding us toward God’s purpose.

Gracious God,

Thank you for the precious gift of your Word. May it dwell richly within us, shaping our thoughts, words, and actions. As we journey through life, grant us the courage to obey your commands, even when the path seems uncertain. May we find prosperity and success—not by worldly standards, but by aligning our lives with your truth.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
