Water and Fire

"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze." Isaiah 43:2 NIV

Israel was in a pickle. They had wandered from the God of their father, forgetting the law and chasing after other gods. As a result, they would be carried into exile by the Assyrian empire. However, Isaiah 43 begins with this hopeful promise, "But now, this is what the Lord says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine." God claimed them as his and would be with them in their coming trials, leading them to deliverance.

God still delivers us today. Despite our shortcomings, in his grace, he saves us time again. When the waters of illness, grief, fear, and anxiety wash over us, God is with us. As we walk through the fires of doubt and despair, he keeps us safe. Why? Because we are his own, he knows not only our names but the most intimate details of our lives.

God who created and formed us, we offer you our thanks and praise. You know the waters and fires each of us is facing at this moment. But, God, we have confidence you are with us, and we place our faith in you to handle every situation. You do this not because we are worthy, but you claim and redeem us in your compassion and love. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
