“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.” — Hebrews 10:23 (ESV)
In the 1970s, a toy called Weebles captured the imagination of children everywhere. These egg-shaped figures had weighted bottoms that made them wobble when pushed—but never fall. The slogan said it all: “Weebles wobble, but they don’t fall down.”
It’s a surprisingly fitting image for the life of faith. Hebrews 10 reminds us that because of Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice, we can “draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith” (v. 22). We have direct access to God—not through our own merit, but through the mercy of Jesus. And because of that, we are invited to hold fast to hope, even when life shakes us.
We wobble.But we don’t fall.Not because we’re strong, but because God is faithful.
The hymn Great Is Thy Faithfulness puts it this way:
Great is thy faithfulness, O God, my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with thee.
Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;
As thou hast been, thou forever wilt be.
That’s the kind of hope Hebrews speaks of—not a vague optimism, but a steady anchor rooted in the character of God. When we feel unsteady, when grief or fear or fatigue push against us, we remember: He who promised is faithful. The One who began a good work in us will carry it through. The One who gave us access will never shut the door. The One who holds the future also keeps us.
So yes, we may wobble. But we are weighted with grace. We are steadied by mercy. We are held by faithfulness that does not fail.
Faithful God, thank you for the hope we have in Christ—a hope that holds us steady even when life rocks us. Thank you for your mercies, new every morning. When we feel unsteady, remind us of your promises. Help us to hold fast to the confession of our hope, trusting that you hold fast to us. Amen.
Peace & Grace,
