When the Clouds Roll In

“Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7, NRSVUE)
Have you ever been outside on a bright, sunny day — the kind with a soft breeze and clear skies — when suddenly everything grows dim? You look up and realize that clouds have slipped in front of the sun. For a moment, you feel that little disappointment, but you know the sun hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s still shining, and soon enough it will break through again.
Moments like that remind us how quickly the light can dim in our own lives, even when we know God has blessed us richly. When we pause to remember all we have and all God has done, we truly do have much to give thanks. But that doesn’t mean our lives are carefree or without troubles. There are seasons when our concerns grow so heavy that they overshadow our gratitude. It’s like the sun is shining, but great clouds of anxiety drift in and obscure its brightness.
It can be difficult to offer thanks in those darker moments. Yet Scripture reminds us that we don’t face them alone. God invites us to give him all — not just some, but all — of our anxieties. We need not carry those crushing burdens by ourselves. We can give thanks because God cares for us, and because, as Hebrews 13:5 promises, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” The clouds may linger, but the sun is still shining. In time, those clouds will surrender to the brightness behind them.
God of light, we thank you for your love and compassion for us. When we are filled with anxiety and despair, you stand ready to assume our burdens. All we need to do is ask. We come now asking you to take these burdens from us and drive away the darkness. Help us remember your goodness and experience your brightness. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Tim
