Work-in-Progress (WIP)

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:6 (ESV)
Many terms in accounting and finance have been difficult for me to grasp. However, after working in manufacturing for several years, one concept I have firmly grasped is work-in-progress (WIP). At each step in the production process, raw materials, labor, and overhead contribute to the growing value of the product until it reaches completion. Depending on what you're producing, WIP lifecycles vary—some move quickly, while others take time. For example, toothpaste is made in large batches, resulting in a shorter cycle than, say, an automobile, which requires intricate assembly and components.
When we accept Jesus, we are like raw materials, unshaped and awaiting transformation. Through community—attending church, group Bible study, and fellowshipping with other believers—we begin to take form. Individually, we refine our faith by reading Scripture, meditating upon its meaning, and praying. These steps shape us, mold us, and bring us closer to who we were designed to be.
Yet, no matter how much effort we put into growing, the true refining work comes from the Holy Spirit. He smooths our rough edges, strengthens our weaknesses, and deepens our understanding. Just like a product in the manufacturing process, we undergo changes, setbacks, and breakthroughs. Some stages take longer, and at times, we feel unfinished—but God sees the completed work even when we do not.
And when we stumble, when we feel like we’ve strayed from the process, we are not discarded. God does not throw away unfinished work—he reprocesses us. Just as a product that isn’t quite ready for completion is refined rather than abandoned, God works within us, restoring and reshaping us. He calls us back, strengthens us, and prepares us for the purpose he originally designed. The Holy Spirit’s work is ongoing, transforming us over time, ensuring that we continue to grow in grace.
One day, when we stand face-to-face with Jesus Christ, we will no longer be a work-in-progress—we will be made complete in his presence, fully restored, and transformed into the finished masterpiece God intended. Until then, we surrender ourselves to his process, trusting that the Creator is shaping us with purpose.
Gracious Father, thank you for shaping us, refining us, and never giving up on the work you are doing in our lives. We surrender our flaws, our weaknesses, and our uncertainties to you, knowing that you see the finished masterpiece even when we only see the rough edges. Help us to embrace the journey, to trust your timing, and to be faithful in the process. May we be diligent in our growth, committed to learning, and open to the work of the Holy Spirit. Until the day we stand before you in completion, keep molding us into your image. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
