SOS

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6 NIV

Have you heard of Shiny Object Syndrome (SOS)? No, I'm not messing with you; it's real. It's whenever people become distracted by whatever the newest trendy thing is, then as quickly they drop it in favor of the following latest fad. So while the object might have fleeting value, mostly the appeal is because other people think it's cool, hip, rad, dope (probably all these terms are outdated by this point), but you get the idea.

Doesn't SOS sound a whole lot like sin? Society and Satan dangle shiny objects to distract us from the truth of Jesus Christ. What is that truth? While we were off seeking temporal things of no value, Christ died for us. Jesus took our sins – everyone who has ever lived and those yet to be born – upon himself on the cross.

What is the cure for spiritual SOS? You already know the answer; it is Jesus. He told us himself, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6) In his love, he died so to free us from sin. In his resurrection, we have the hope of eternal life. In his departure, he sent the Holy Spirit to help us withstand the shiny objects.

Almighty God, we give you thanks for our Lord and Savior, the sinless Jesus Christ, who assumed our iniquities upon going to the cross. He offered his life in atonement for our sin. We confess we are sometimes distracted by the shiny objects of this world and forget the truth of our salvation. Forgive us; we pray, and give us the strength to reject sin. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
