When the Mirror Speaks

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.” — James 1:22–24 (NIV)

Most of us catch our reflection several times a day. There’s the quick glance in the bathroom mirror as we wash our hands—barely enough time to notice anything before we move on. And then there are the moments when we linger: shaving, brushing our teeth, combing our hair. We study our reflection to make sure things are as they should be.

Scripture works the same way. When we read, listen, or sit quietly with the Word of God, we’re looking into a mirror that reveals who we truly are. Not with a passing glance, but with the kind of attention that invites honesty. Sometimes we like what we see. Sometimes we don’t. If we saw our hair sticking up, we’d smooth it down. If there’s a bit of spinach caught in our teeth, we’d take care of it. Our spiritual life deserves the same care.

Here’s the good news: the same Holy Spirit who shows us what needs tending also walks with us as we grow. We’re not left to fix ourselves by sheer effort. The Spirit who convicts is the Spirit who comforts, strengthens, and transforms. As we respond to what the mirror reveals, God’s grace does the deeper work—shaping us slowly, steadily, into the likeness of Christ.

Gracious God, Your Word is a mirror that reveals both who we are and who we can become. Give us the courage not only to hear your truth but to live it. When your Spirit shows us what needs mending, help us respond with humility and hope. Shape our lives so that what we reflect to the world looks more and more like Christ. In his name we pray. Amen.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Tim
