A Conversation of Love

Writer: timothyrsoutherntimothyrsouthern

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. - Deuteronomy 6:5 (NIV)

As I read today’s verse, I pictured it as a dialogue between God, the Father, speaking with divine wisdom and compassion, and a person seeking understanding and guidance. It takes place in a quiet, serene setting, such as a garden or a peaceful room where the Person is in profound contemplation. The conversation may go something like this.

God: I want you to love me with all your heart.

Person: I'm not sure what you mean.

God: To love me wholeheartedly means to center your thoughts, desires, and intentions on me. It’s about letting your love for me guide every decision and action.

Person: I need your help. I want to love you with all my heart, but I don't know how.

God: Don’t worry, I’ll help you. Also, I want you to love me with all your soul.

Person: I don’t understand. What does it mean to love you with all my soul?

God: To love me with all your soul means to dedicate your very being to me. It’s about your spiritual devotion, trusting me deeply, and seeking a relationship with me in all you do.

Person: I'm trying, but I still feel uncertain. Trust is difficult for me, and I am frequently tempted by doubt. How can I love you with all my soul when I’m unsure?

God: I will help you; my guidance is always with you. Lastly, I want you to love me with all your strength.

Person: How do I love you with all my strength?

God: Loving me with all your strength means using your abilities, resources, and energy to serve me and others. It’s about putting your love for me into action through your deeds.

Person: What can I expect to receive in return for my love?

God: You have always been loved by me. I provide you with life, breath, and every good thing. My love is unconditional and eternal. But I’m going to do something extraordinary. Your ancestors rebelled against me, creating a rift in our special relationship. In my love for you, I am sending the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who sacrificed himself so that you may be reunited with me.

Person: That is an incredible promise. But sometimes, it feels overwhelming to love you so completely.

God: Remember, what I ask of you—to love me with all your heart, soul, and strength—is small compared to what you receive. My love is boundless; through the Messiah, Jesus, you are given the greatest gift: reconciliation and eternal life with me. I have also sent a special helper to you, the Holy Spirit, a constant presence and a reminder of my love. Though asked in entirety, your love is a response to the infinite love I have already poured out upon you.

Person: Thank you for your guidance and your everlasting love. I will strive to love you with all my heart, soul, and strength, knowing your love sustains me.

God: Go in peace, my beloved. Remember, my love will always be with you, guiding and strengthening you.

Loving Father, thank you for your eternal guidance and boundless love. As we strive to love you with all our hearts, souls, and strength, help us feel your presence and reassurance daily. Empower us to serve you and others with all that we are and have. May your Holy Spirit guide our actions and words to reflect your love and bring glory to your name. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
