It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.1 Corinthians 13:7 NIV
The "It" in this verse is love. This verse is from what is commonly referred to as The Love Chapter. We frequently hear it read at weddings, which is appropriate, but today let's look at how this verse applies to our Mothers. They may not have been our biological moms, but all the women who have nurtured and loved us.
The good mother is a protector. As toddlers, she held our hands in parking lots and busy stores so we wouldn't come to harm. With eyes in the back of her head and a sixth sense, she was there just in time to save us when we climbed on chairs and counters to reach cookie jars. Our homes were places of safety simply because mom was there.
Mom trusted us even when sometimes we didn't deserve it. We felt guilty lying to mom–which likely we all did. Yet, mom always believed us, and when she discovered the truth though hurt, she would forgive us. She trusted us to make good decisions and appeared calm and assured, although she worried and silently prayed inside.
Mom always remained hopeful. Worrying for us during our troubled times but maintained her faith we would be okay. No matter how crazy our dreams were for the future, she encouraged and believed in us. Her constant hope was that we would find contentment and happiness.
Regardless of how far we strayed, her devotion remains steadfast, and her love endures. It is not just for a short time but forever. Even after our moms passed, the memory of her love lives on in us.
Father God, we give thanks today for our mothers. For all those remarkable women who have nurtured us. They have protected, trusted, and hoped for us; their love never failed. We ask for blessings for all the moms still with us and those who have departed. Help us to share the love of our mothers with all we meet. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
