A Strong Tower

"The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe."

Proverbs 18:10 ESV

In the days of fortified cities, the tower served an important role. It helped both a defense and offense capacity. The tower was situated, so it had a panoramic view of the area around the city. A sentry would keep a watchful guard from the top of the tower for the sign of any threats. If invaded, the tower was a place of refuge for those threatened. When writing this text, the writer may have had in mind the tower within the city of Jerusalem.

At times our world seems to be crumbling around us, and we feel threatened on all sides. The enemy is lobbing projectiles at us; sickness, unemployment, racism, addiction, you name it. We may become so caught up in the battle that we forget there is a refuge. All too often, we need to turn from the campaign and retreat to the tower's safety. In God, we can find sanctuary, a haven of peace, comfort, and rest. The challenges may not cease, but in this stronghold, God may offer us some different strategies for fighting the battle.

God, we give you thanks for being our strong tower. When the troubles of this world become too much, help us remember that we can always run to your safety. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
