Grace in the Unfinished Places
“We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28 (NRSVUE)
Recently, I was visiting a retirement community and noticed a large table in the common room with a jigsaw puzzle in progress. A few pieces were already connected, others were scattered in little clusters, and plenty were still upside‑down. When I asked about it, someone told me, “It’s for everyone. Anyone who wants to can stop by, take a moment, and add a piece.” There was something quietly beautiful about that — a shared project, unfinished, waiting for whoever had time, patience, or curiosity.
While reading today’s scripture, I thought about how life sometimes feels like a big jigsaw puzzle. Some pieces fall easily into place; others may look like the right shape at first but aren’t, and others are the right shape but don’t match the color or pattern. Sometimes, in our frustration, we may be tempted to shove pieces that aren’t quite right where they don’t belong. We want the picture to come together quickly. We want clarity. We want progress.
And sometimes the pieces of life aren’t immediately visible. Some are covered by other concerns. Some are still in the box, waiting for the right moment. Some have fallen to the floor and need to be found again. And some simply take time — more time than we expected — before they fit where they belong.
But God is really in charge of the puzzle. Oh, he expects us to be actively involved. He wants us to turn the pieces over, to stay at the table, to keep looking for what fits. But he is the One who sees the whole picture — the final image we can’t yet make out. And in ways we don’t always recognize, he is quietly working all things together, even the pieces we don’t understand, even the ones we wish weren’t part of the box.
Gracious God, thank you for meeting us in the unfinished places of our lives. Where pieces are scattered, bring your peace. Where edges don’t yet align, give us patience. Where we cannot see the whole picture, teach us to trust your steady hand. Guide us piece by piece, day by day, until your grace shapes something beautiful in us. Amen.
Grace & Peace, Pastor Tim
