Awesome God

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10 NIV

Today we often think of fear as being afraid; however, the Hebrew word from which fear is translated means to have reverence. The glimmer of true wisdom is in our recognition of God's awesomeness. As we look around us in wonder at all his creation and ponder his continual grace, we are in "fear of the Lord."

However, this fear is simply the beginning of our insight into who God is. While we can never fully comprehend the how of God's workings, we come to appreciate his righteousness, holiness, and grace. Our eyes are opened to what he had done in our lives.

Sadly, many either don't have this reverence for God or have replaced it with other things; money, power, and the world's knowledge placing their reliance on their limited abilities instead of the wisdom that comes from God. As Christians, though, we know to seek the one true God for guidance in all things instead of blindly accepting the "wisdom" of any group, leader, or party.

But there is more to fear of the Lord than just knowing; once we are shown, we must act. Standing idly by as injustice in all its forms around us is happening is not an alternative. God gave us dominion over the world to rule it with his wisdom and knowledge and stand against evil.

Awesome God, we come reverently before you today. We confess at times, we have not always acted with respect towards you, and we have permitted the world to influence our hearts and minds. Forgive us, we pray. Grant us the pure knowledge that comes from knowing you. Make us wise in your ways. Help us act in that knowledge with love, justice, and mercy towards others. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
