Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. - James 3:13 NRSV
Reading this verse in reverse gives us a different perspective of wisdom. Our actions are the children of our wisdom, and if we follow this practice, we will have a good life. But it all begins with wisdom -- the right kind.
Where do we get wisdom? It’s not something you can order from Amazon or buy at a big box store but needs to be acquired. All wisdom comes from an investment of time and commitment -- and yes, love. It is taking those things we’ve learned and put them into practice. In searching for Godly wisdom, it means spending time in Godly pursuits. Through the study of God’s word, we learn of those things that are important to Him. In prayer and meditation, we converse with him and listen to his voice. In following the Holy Spirit, we learn to walk in wisdom.
The works of worldly wisdom often are done to meet an agenda and stroke egos, but the fruits of Godly wisdom are done in gentleness with humility and kindness. They are those things that put others before self and reflect the selflessness of Jesus Christ.
God, please help us as we strive for your wisdom, and let all our works be born of gentleness. May all we do today be for your glory. We ask this in Jesus Christ. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
