Can Do

I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. John 13:34 (NRSV)

We are all benefactors of God's love. He gives us life and breath, and daily we are blessed with fresh expressions of his love. We know, “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life." We affirm, our good Father offers us forgiveness, and when we stumble, he raises us up.

That's a lot of love. While we may not have the power to love exactly as God loves -- we are only human -- there's still much we can do. God knows our limitations and sent us his Son to live among us, so we might have an example of the love of which we are capable. We can feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and care for the prisoner and foreigner. We can offer each other forgiveness -- although at times it may be difficult. Some may have the gift of healing, those of us who do not can pray. We can tell others of the love, promise, and hope found in the gospel of Jesus. Through obedience to the Holy Spirit, we can change attitudes and opinions. That's a lot of things we can do to show God's love to others.

God, we give you thanks for all your love. We are thankful for the example of Jesus, who healed, fed, and taught. Please help us follow Christ’s example and be inclusive in our love, and to do everything within the power given us to show your love to others. Amen.
