"Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."
Galatians 6:2 NIV
The idea of helping the other is not uniquely Christian; for most people, it's just the right thing to do. However, as Christians, there is more to it. Christ commands us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Part of that love is to be there for each other when things go sideways, but also when we falter spiritually.
To place this verse in context, we must look at the previous verse, "Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted." We need to help each other when we see each other in sin -- to care for each other’s souls. To offer assistance when we stumble and offer a hand up when we fall. The restoration must be done gently, with kindness and love; otherwise, we may push the other away. The verse further cautions us; we must be careful in extending our helping hand into the quicksand of sin lest we also fall.
God, thank you for your love. Please help us to fulfill your law in showing that same love to others. Father, help us be there for each other when we stumble and when we fall to restore them to you. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
