Chasing the World

Writer: timothyrsoutherntimothyrsouthern

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 1 John 2:15‭-‬16 NIV

You may be acquainted with the word hedonism. The selfish act of chasing pleasure for its own sake, "If it feels good, do it." You don't have to look around very far today to find examples. In following this doctrine, no consideration is made for what happens on the other side of that feeling good, the self-destruction and the others affected in the process.

Satan is a big advocate for hedonism. The more we chase after what is sin, the less time we have to think about our immortal souls. Yes, those things may give us temporary sensual pleasure, but they ultimately lead to death and leave our souls in a dangerous place.

There is good news: God offers a way out. Ever since man chose evil over good back in the Garden, God has provided a path back to him. First, through the descendants of Abraham, and later to all people by Christ's ultimate sacrifice.

God, of all creation, we thank you for giving us this beautiful world to enjoy. But, at times, we confess that we are tempted to enjoy too much. Satan encourages us to chase pleasure, abandoning our souls, and forgetting you are our Creator and our Lord. We give you thanks for your constant love and offer of salvation. Please help us today to not fall in love with the things of this world. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
