Claims

Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. - 1 John 2:6 NIV

The word claim has a few different meanings. First, we can assert that we believe in something and identify it to be true for us. For example, "I am a Christian." Another meaning, though, is to have an entitlement, as a birthright. When we accept Christ, we become God's adopted children and co-heirs with Christ. Thus, there is a privilege associated with this claim.

With that privilege, there comes a responsibility. When we claim to be a follower of Christ, it is more than checking a box on a form -- we must become imitators of Christ. We need to act justly, show mercy, and love all people -- even those we don't particularly like. Like Christ, we must read and meditate on the scripture, pray to our Father, and listen for his voice. Also, when faced with persecution, we must stand ready to defend our claim.

Heavenly Father, our loving and gracious parent, thank you for your Son, Jesus Christ. Please help us do more than claim to be Christians, but to live like Christ. Let us be worthy of our birthright. Please help us to share this claim with others so they too can become one of your children. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
