"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV
The hymn Great Is Thy Faithfulness, made famous during the Billy Graham crusades, beautifully echoes the mercies of God's love found in this passage. Here are the first verse and chorus:
"Great is Thy faithfulness, "O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not.
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.
"Great is Thy faithfulness!" "Great is Thy faithfulness!"
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
"Great is Thy faithfulness, "Lord, unto me!
Few things are predictable in life, but one thing we can always count on is the sun rises and sets. The timing of those events vary from day to day, but they have never stopped happening. The same God that separates night from day, each day since the beginning of time, also extends fresh mercies to us every day. His mercy will also never end; day end, day out throughout eternity. As Buzz Lightyear, from Toy Story, says, "To infinity and beyond." Why does God do this? Only one reason, love! Despite a long list of our shortcomings and inconsistencies, God consistently shares his grace purely out of love.
Precious God, we give you thanks for the mercies you give us each day. On each new day, may we glorify you, and share the message of your faithfulness with others. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
