"For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life." Ephesians 2:10 (NRSV)
It's easy to forget sometimes, but every single person ever born was created to do good. Even the most reprehensible and infamous characters we can think of were meant for good works. Although God's desire and intention, we often elect to do otherwise, like Adam and Eve.
There is nothing new in this; we are sinners and are drawn to sin. Like an alcoholic who remains an alcoholic even when sober for decades. We are sinners saved by God's grace but still sinners. Our salvation comes through knowing Jesus Christ; that is the thing that restores us to God's original plan. And it is only by our faith that those good works come to fruition.
Can you imagine all the good that could be done if everyone lived according to the purpose of their creation? If all were to seek God's face, those things that create division and conflict would be gone. The wounds that sin makes would be healed. Our love and care for each other and all of God's creation would bring about his kingdom on earth.
Father, we give you thanks for all of your creation. We confess we often forget we were created to do good. We are drawn to selfishness and do only what is best for our group and us. God, please forgive us, restore us, so we can do the kind of good works that benefit all. Help us to live as examples of Jesus Christ. Let our lives serve as a witness of your transformational power. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
