“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” ‭‭John‬ ‭16:33‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Shortly before Jesus is arrested he has a final conversation with the disciples. He knows what is to happen to him and is preparing them for what is to come. He is preparing them not only for his death, resurrection, and ascension but for their own persecution (16:2) “They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.” Even though Jesus will no longer physically be with them, he is sending them a Helper — the gift of the Holy Spirit. This is the peace that is to help them, and us, through the troubles ahead. Through Jesus’ conquering death — “overcoming the world” — we do not need to fear the thing many people fear most. We have the promise of eternal life beyond these mortal bodies.

God, we are thankful that in our most terrible days we have the Holy Spirit and the comfort and peace it brings. Even in our death, there is a promise thanks to your sinless Son conquering death. Help us to share the joy and hopefulness of your salvation with others. Amen.
