Decluttering Our Souls

Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)

Recently, we have begun decluttering our home. Over the years, though we thought we were good at getting rid of unused items, some things are hard to part with, even though they are unused. Then there are the new things we have brought in–especially books, which we hold onto despite having already read them. Our home had become, as comedian-philosopher George Carlin humorously put it, “A house is just a place to keep your stuff while you go out and get more stuff.”

This project made me think about the clutter in our spiritual lives. Just as our homes fill with unnecessary items, our hearts and minds can become cluttered with worries and distractions. Today’s verses invite us to ask God to search our hearts and remove anything hindering our spiritual growth.

Decluttering isn’t just about physical items; it’s also about letting go of spiritual baggage like anger, unforgiveness, anxiety, and doubt. By asking God to reveal these things, we can begin the process of spiritual decluttering.

Keeping our souls clean means regularly inspecting our hearts and minds, just as we care for our homes. This honesty with ourselves and God makes room for His love, joy, and peace.

Heavenly Father, search and know us. Reveal the clutter in our souls and help us let go of the spiritual baggage that weighs us down. Lead us in the way everlasting and fill our hearts with Your peace. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
