Empty Conversation

“The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” — Psalm 145:18 (NRSVUE)

What does it mean to pray “in truth”? Think about conversations we have every day. Sometimes they’re filled with polite platitudes: “How about this weather?” or “Did you catch the Patriots game?” These exchanges are fine for passing moments, but they don’t build deep, lasting relationship. Real closeness comes when we move beyond surface talk into honesty—sharing joys, struggles, hopes, and fears.

Even with prayer, this can happen. Take the Lord’s Prayer, for example. Jesus gave it as a model for His disciples, and it remains a gift to us. But if we recite it without sincerity—letting the words pass our lips without engaging our hearts—it risks becoming empty conversation. The power of the prayer is not in the repetition alone, but in bringing our honest selves into dialogue with God through its words.

David reminds us that God is near to all who call on Him—but especially to those who call on Him in truth. In Hebrew, “truth” carries the sense of sincerity, faithfulness, and integrity. It’s not about polished words or perfect prayers. It’s about being real before God. Calling on Him in truth means speaking honestly, not just repeating phrases; aligning our prayers with God’s character and promises; and bringing our whole selves, not hiding behind masks.

When we pray without truth—just words without heart—it’s like empty conversation. God hears, but the intimacy is missing. But when we pray with honesty—confessing our weakness, expressing our gratitude, voicing our real needs—God draws near. That’s where relationship deepens. So, the invitation is simple: don’t settle for “small talk” with God. Bring Him your real self. Call on Him in truth.

Today, try one prayer where you set aside polished words and simply speak to God as you are. Or pray the Lord’s Prayer slowly, pausing at each phrase, letting its words become your own. Tell Him what’s really on your heart. Trust that He is near.

Lord, you promise to be near to all who call on You in truth. Teach us to pray with sincerity, to bring our whole selves before you. Draw us close as we speak honestly and deepen our relationship with You. Amen.

Peace & Grace,

Pastor Tim
