Encourage One Another

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Hebrews 10:24‭-‬25 NIV

If one were to look for a mission statement for the church, this text is a good start. In ministry, we care for each other, living out the example of Jesus Christ in sharing love. The evidence of this love is in our deeds, visiting with the sick, taking goodies to those confined at home, writing cards and letters of encouragement, and others. Our mission then is reaching all those outside the four walls of our buildings; in love, it is an extension of those same actions; feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and providing aid to those in need.

While we need to do these things individually, it is also crucial for us to meet together. When we gather, we share our joys and concerns. In listening, we know how to pray and care for each other. In sharing communion, we become one with God and each other. We accept the bread and cup as reconciled people, and together we worship God, giving thanks for all he has done and confidence for all he will do.

The last line introduces the urgency, "and all the more as you see the Day approaching." We don't know when that time will be; only the Father knows, but we know with certainty each day brings us closer. So let us leave nothing undone. That thing God is putting upon your heart right now, do it today for tomorrow is uncertain.

Compassionate Father, you surround us with your love and grace. In the example of Jesus Christ, you showed us how we should care for each other. Guide us this day as we live out his example, encouraging each other and spurring one another towards love and good deeds. May all we do be done with a sense of urgency, and may it glorify you. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
