Established Steps

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” — Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)
We spend our lives making choices. As children, we formed friendships and lost them. We moved through classrooms, grades, and schools. Later we chose a direction — a calling, a profession, a place to belong. We met people who shaped us, perhaps found someone to love, perhaps built families through blood and through bond. All of these moments felt like steps we intentionally took.
And we should take them. Scripture never asks us to drift. We are meant to seek the good, to pursue wisdom, to choose paths that reflect God’s character. Yet when we look back, the story rarely feels like something we crafted alone. It feels more like a path that was quietly steadied beneath our feet. We planned what we could, but God was shaping what mattered — through opportunities we didn’t expect, losses that redirected us, mercies that carried us, and grace that met us in places we never intended to go.
Proverbs 16 keeps circling this mystery. We act, we choose, we pursue the way of wisdom — yet God is the One who establishes, who makes firm, who redeems the steps we take. Our planning is real, but God’s guiding is wiser. Our seeking matters, but God’s faithfulness holds. And somehow, through that holy interplay, our lives become a story of grace rather than mere self-direction.
So today, as you consider your own path, let this verse steady your heart. Seek the way that aligns with God. Make the choices that reflect Christ’s love. And trust that the God who establishes your steps will meet you in every turn, every surprise, and every moment of grace.
Lord, guide the paths we choose and bless the intentions we offer. Establish our steps in your wisdom. Redirect us when we wander, steady us when we falter, and lead us in the way that brings life. Amen.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Tim
