Falling Short, Held by Grace

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:23-24 (NIV)

Maybe, of all the things we fear, the most common is the fear of failing. We've all had the experience of starting something — a new hobby or a relationship — and then giving up after a while because it became too difficult. And sometimes that same fear keeps us from starting something we really want to do at all. Into this fear steps today’s message of assurance.

In today’s verse, Paul reminds us that all — not just some, but all — of us fall short. Naming that truth doesn’t condemn us; it frees us. It means our struggles aren’t signs that we’re unworthy or incapable. They’re simply part of being human. We carry limits, habits, and histories that make the spiritual journey uneven. We want to do good and still stumble. We hope for better, and still lose our footing. And God knows this about us — every bit of it — and still calls us His beloved, still claims us as His children.

And because God already knows our frailty, we don’t have to fear beginning. We don’t have to wait until we’re confident, strong, or certain of success. Grace meets us at the starting line. God goes with us into every new attempt, every fresh beginning, every small step that feels risky. We can begin without fear because our worth isn’t riding on the outcome.

Even when discouragement creeps in — when progress is slow, when old habits return, when we feel like we’re slipping backward — God’s faithfulness doesn’t waver. Our hope isn’t anchored in our performance but in God’s steady mercy. We are not carried by our own strength but by the One who walks with us, lifts us, and keeps calling us forward.

And this is the heart of it: God’s grace and redemption hold us more securely than our failures ever could. Our false starts and stumbles, when we keep God at the forefront of our journey, become places where grace does its quiet work. We are justified freely, not because we’ve earned it, but because Christ has already done what we could not. Redemption doesn’t wait for us to get it right. It meets us exactly where we fall short and fills the gap with love.

Today, let this truth settle into your spirit. You may fall short, but you are never beyond the reach of God’s grace. Begin again. Keep going. Trust that Christ’s redeeming love is already at work in you.

Gracious God, you know my fears, my limits, and the places where I stumble. Meet me today with your mercy. Give me courage to begin, perseverance to continue, and trust to rest in your grace. Redeem what I cannot fix and lead me in your way of hope. Amen.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Tim
