Finding Strength in God’s Faithfulness

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV)

In his 1976 interview with Playboy magazine, Jimmy Carter made a notable statement about temptation and lust. He said:

"I’ve looked on a lot of women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times. This is something that God recognizes I will do—and I have done it—and God forgives me for it."12

Carter’s candid admission was based on his interpretation of Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:28, where Jesus says that looking at someone with lust is akin to committing adultery in one’s heart. Carter’s point was to emphasize human fallibility and the need for God’s forgiveness.

Temptation is a universal experience. No one is excluded. Whether it’s addiction, anger, greed, or any other struggle, everyone faces temptations. This can help us feel less isolated, knowing that our struggles are part of the human condition.

But today’s scripture reminds us of three things:

God’s Faithfulness: He is always present and supportive. This assurance can be a source of strength, reminding us that we are not alone in their battles. God’s reliability is a constant, even when facing various temptations.

Limits of Temptation: The promise that God will not let us be tempted beyond what we can bear is reassuring. It suggests that while the struggle is real and challenging, it is not insurmountable. This can instill hope and resilience, encouraging us to keep fighting and not give up.

Provision of a Way Out: God promises to provide a way out of temptation. This can be interpreted as God offering practical means of escape, such as support from friends, family, or a faith community, as well as professional help like counseling or therapy. It reassures Us that resources and paths are available to overcome our struggles.

Believing in the truth of this verse can come from our personal experiences of God’s faithfulness and the testimonies of others who have overcome similar struggles. Reflecting on past instances of God’s deliverance helps strengthen our faith. Hearing the stories of others who have found victory over temptations through faith can be incredibly inspiring and affirming.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your unwavering faithfulness and the assurance that You are always with us in our struggles. Help us to remember that no temptation is beyond what we can bear with Your support. Guide us to the paths of escape You provide and strengthen our faith through our experiences and the testimonies of others. May we always find comfort and hope in Your promises. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
