Fitness in Body and Soul

"For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come." 1 Timothy 4:8 (NIV)
At 90 years old, my friend Frank was a fixture at the gym. Five times a week, without fail, you would find him in the gym, walking on the treadmill and using the weight machines, determined to keep his body strong. His commitment to fitness was remarkable, and it was clear that his dedication had contributed to his long and fulfilling life. He understood that taking care of his body was important—it gave him vitality, kept him independent, and allowed him to continue doing the things he loved. He served as an inspiration to all of us at the gym.
Medical research confirms the benefits of staying active as we age. Regular exercise improves heart health, strengthens bones, and even supports cognitive function. It helps prevent falls, keeps muscles strong, and enhances overall well-being. But as valuable as physical training is, Paul reminds us there is something even greater—spiritual training.
I love how The Message paraphrases this verse: “Exercise daily in God—no spiritual flabbiness, please! Workouts in the gymnasium are useful, but a disciplined life in God is far more so, making you fit both today and forever.”
While exercise strengthens the body, spiritual discipline enhances the soul. Reading Scripture, spending time in prayer, and living out our faith build endurance for the challenges of life. Just as muscles grow through resistance, our faith deepens when we persevere through trials and tribulations. And unlike physical fitness, which benefits us only in this life, spiritual training prepares us for eternity.
Physical activity takes different forms for each of us, depending on our health and individual circumstances. But honoring our bodies by caring for them, whether through movement, nutrition, or rest, is a form of stewardship that allows us to serve and live well.
Today, I invite you to reflect: Are you investing in your spiritual health as much as you are in your physical health? Caring for our bodies is important—it helps us serve, grow, and live well. But even more, are you nourishing your soul with God’s Word, seeking Him in prayer, and walking in obedience? Let’s commit to training both our bodies and spirits, recognizing that while physical health benefits us in this life, spiritual growth prepares us for eternity.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of life and the ability to care for our bodies. Help us to be good stewards of our health, but even more, help us to prioritize our spiritual growth. Strengthen our faith, deepen our relationship with You, and guide us in living lives that honor You. May we train our hearts and minds in godliness, knowing that it holds promise for both now and eternity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
