Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. - 2 Corinthians 3:17 NIV
In the United States, we place a high value on our freedoms, the ability to elect our officials, to voice our opinions, to worship (or not worship), and to bear arms. In addition, our economy is based on the idea of a free market; we have the freedom to own businesses and compete for trade. So, overall, I think most would agree freedom is a good thing.
Sometimes though, freedom doesn't mean free. In the name of freedom, we sometimes make poor choices, and we do harmful things to ourselves and others -- we sin. But sinning isn't the end; thanks to God's grace, there is forgiveness and freedom. Through the Holy Spirit -- God in us -- we are given the power to overcome. By listening to and obeying the Spirit, we can experience true freedom.
God, we give you thanks for pure and holy freedom. We confess we sometimes abuse your grace and sin. Father, forgive us and open our hearts to the Holy Spirit. Please help us be obedient to you so that we may continue to experience the freedom found in you. Amen.
