"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." 1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV
No sin we will ever face, is new nor have other people before us not been tempted by the same thing. All we need to do is read the Bible to know it is true; idolatry, sexual immorality, testing God, and discontent (v. 7-10). Satan keeps using the same playbook because it's been successful since the dawn of time. Satan is also lazy, resorting to the temptations that are our weaknesses.
While Satan may dangle sin in front of us as a false enticement, he has no real power. God is powerful and faithful! He is always with us, not allowing Satan to tempt us with more than we can take. That doesn't mean it is easy! As anyone in recovery will tell you, it is a constant battle. But Christ, who was tempted as we are tempted, gives us strength beyond our mortal power to resist temptation in our weakness. All we need to do is to call on his name, God, help us!
Loving God, thank you for the strength you give us to resist temptation. We confess at times; we feel the strong pull of sin. Satan paints a false rosy picture making it look so appealing. Through your Holy Spirit, though, you give us the strength to overcome Satan. We have the example of our very human yet divine Lord Jesus, who experienced temptation and endured. Jesus the pure sacrifice free from sin, who died so we can have this hope. We pray today not only for ourselves but for all people everywhere, and especially for those battling addiction. We pray for their faith and strength. In your Son Jesus, we pray. Amen.
