God’s Timing, God’s Growth

“So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” 1 Corinthians 3:7 (NIV)
In early April, we expanded a large area in our front yard. The landscaper came in with a bobcat and cleared away the brush. After two truckloads of fill and another of topsoil, they sowed grass seed with instructions to water every day. Thanks to all the rain we received, this required only a couple of days of dragging out the hose to soak the ground.
Yet as days passed, I found myself growing impatient. There were no sprouts, no green—just barren dirt. Had something gone wrong? But then, after a stretch of warm, sunny days this past week, I noticed tiny blades of grass poking through the soil. Growth was happening, but not on my timeline.
This experience reminded me of two spiritual truths. First, there is an order to growth—whether in a garden or our faith. The ground must be prepared, the seed must be sown, and watering must take place. But ultimately, only God brings the increase. No amount of effort on my part could force the grass to sprout—it happened because God provided the right conditions at the right time.
Second, growth requires patience. Often, in our spiritual lives, we long for immediate transformation, clear answers, or visible fruit from our efforts. But just as a seed needs time to germinate, so do the works God is cultivating within us. We may not see progress instantly, but we can trust that, in his perfect timing, He will bring forth the results He desires.
Are there areas in your life where you feel like nothing is changing despite your efforts? Perhaps you’re faithfully planting and watering—praying, serving, studying God’s Word—but still waiting for a breakthrough. Be encouraged: God is at work beneath the surface. Trust him with the process, and in time, you’ll see the growth He has ordained.
Heavenly Father, thank you for being the One who brings the increase. Help me to trust in your timing, knowing that you are always working, even when I cannot see the results. Teach me patience as you cultivate growth in my heart and remind me that my role is to plant and water, but yours is to make things flourish. Give me peace in seasons of waiting and confidence in your faithful provision. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
