Good Grief

“For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation and brings no regret, but worldly grief produces death.” (2 Corinthians 7:10, NRSVUE)

In the Peanuts comic strip, Charlie Brown would sometimes exclaim, “Good grief!” It was his way of naming that mix of exasperation and resignation — and yet he always kept trying. Even after Lucy snatched the football away for the hundredth time, just as he was ready to kick it, he’d dust himself off and give it another go.

Paul speaks of another kind of “good grief,” one that the Holy Spirit stirs within us. Christ has already saved us by His amazing gift, but when we become aware of the places where we’ve missed the mark — the sharp word, the selfish choice, the quiet neglect — that grief is not meant to crush us. It is meant to awaken us. Godly grief nudges us toward repentance, toward turning back to the One who loves us. It is grief with purpose, grief that leads to life.

Worldly grief, on the other hand, leaves us stuck — ashamed, defeated, convinced we’ll never get it right. But godly grief is different. It is the Spirit’s gentle tug on the heart, reminding us that we belong to a God who forgives, restores, and welcomes us home again and again. When we respond to that tug, we discover what Paul promises: repentance that leads to salvation and brings no regret.

Like Charlie Brown, we may sometimes find ourselves in one of those “Good grief!” moments — flat on our backs, frustrated by our own missteps. But by God’s grace, we can get up, turn toward Christ, and try again, not in our own strength but in the strength of the One who never pulls away His love.

Gracious God, thank you for the kind of grief that leads us back to you. When your Spirit stirs our hearts, help us not to ignore it or turn away. Give us courage to repent, to rise again, and to walk in the new life you offer. Surround us with your mercy, steady us with your grace, and shape us more and more into the likeness of Christ. In His name we pray. Amen.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Tim
