Groundhog Day

My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 1 John 2:1 NIV

In the 1993 film Groundhog Day, Bill Murray's character, Phil Conners, a cynical weather reporter, goes to Punxsutawney, PA, to cover Phil the Groundhog. The following day he awakes at 6:00 am to Sonny and Cher, "You Got Me Babe" on the radio. He repeats the same day repeatedly until he sees a way of escape; he changes himself.

Sometimes, we may feel like that. We repeatedly try not to sin, but there it is again. However, this verse gives us hope; it offers us an escape from the rut of sin. While we are to try our very best not to sin, when we do, we have Jesus Christ, the Holy Son of God, to intercede on our behalf. We receive God's pardon when we confess and repent; otherwise, we remain trapped in our own personal Groundhog Day, making the same mistakes.

Almighty God, we thank you for the escape offered in salvation and the forgiveness in repentance. We confess we have sinned, sometimes with knowledge; at others, it is unintentional, something we have said or done to wound another. We come seeking forgiveness through Jesus Christ, our advocate. Amen.

Shalom,

Pastor Tim
