But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57 NIV

You may remember verb tenses if you recall your early education, probably around third or fourth grade. In understanding the English language, it's essential to know whether we're talking about the past, present, or future. Because the Bible was recorded over time, recounting oral tradition, we often encounter the past tense in scripture. We may then be tempted to think of the Bible only in terms of historical events and not as God’s living Word.

In today's verse, though, Paul uses the present tense, "He gives us the victory." We can get excited by this reminder that God's actions aren't limited to the past but right now, in this time and place, even as we struggle through whatever we're battling, God is giving us the victory. Even victory to death, “'“Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” (v. 55) How is this victory possible? "Through our Lord Jesus Christ."

Precious and loving God, thank you for giving us Jesus Christ through whom we can overcome. Help us to remember that though the Bible was written long ago, the Word is still very much alive, and by the Holy Spirit, it dwells within us. May our lives be a testimony to your glory. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
