Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Psalms 37:4 NIV
Last evening we began a new Bible study using the book Not a Fan by Kyle Idleman. A recurring theme is something he calls DTR or Define the Relationship. It's that pivotal moment, especially in a romantic relationship, when we decide how we are going to proceed. It's the commitment conversation. To become faithful disciples, we need to have that DTR conversation with Christ.
David is an example of someone who established that relationship with God early in his life. He was not perfect, he certainly made mistakes, but he remained in his heart in love with God. Looking back in his old age, he shares the wisdom of his lifelong commitment, "Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart."
Today let's take our delight in God. Reveling in his love and enjoying the time we get to spend with him. Let's read the Bible as a love letter and let our prayers be the intimate conversation of lovers. God will give us not simply the things we want but the desires–the cravings of our hearts.
God, thank you for loving us. We confess we have not always loved you as we should, but we desire to do better. We inwardly crave an intimate relationship with you but don't always know how. Melt our hearts and teach us to delight in you. Help us live into your love. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
