Held in His Care

“What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” Luke 12:6-7 NLT

Our grandson William was over recently to play with our new puppy, Finn. He had known Finn was coming for weeks, and we tried to describe that Maltese puppies are very small, but upon seeing him in person for the first time, he remarked, “He’s tiny!” As he played with him, getting down on the floor with him and tossing toys, it was evident this little two-and-a-half-pound creature had captured his heart. His reaction was to display immediate compassion and love.

William’s love for Finn was instant—his smallness only deepened his care and compassion for him. In the same way, today’s verses reassure us that God tenderly watches over even the sparrows. Just as he cares for them, he cherishes us—his beloved creation.

When Jesus spoke to his disciples in Luke 12, he was preparing them for the hardships they would face as his followers. He used the example of sparrows to remind his disciples that, despite the trials they would face, their lives were in God’s hands. If God notices even the smallest of his creatures, how much more will he sustain those who follow him? Jesus did not promise them an easy path, but instead promised them security in God's love. In the midst of uncertainty, persecution, and fear, they needed to remember this truth: God sees them, God values them, and God will never forget them.

Just as William recognized Finn's smallness and showered him with love, God sees us fully—He knows our struggles, our worries, and even the smallest details of our lives. Our worth is not determined by our circumstances but by our Creator.

Sparrows, though common and seemingly insignificant, are not forgotten by God. How much more then does he see and care for us, his beloved children? No trial, no hardship, not even our moments of doubt, can diminish the truth of his unchanging love.

So today, whatever you may face, hold on to this promise: You are seen. You are known. You are deeply loved by the God who calls you his own. Secure in the knowledge of your value, how might you live differently today? Is there a worry or fear you’ve been holding onto that you need to entrust to his care?

Heavenly Father, thank you for the reassurance that you see me, love me, and care for me. Help me to trust in your presence, even when I feel unseen or unworthy. Remind me daily that my value is found in you, not in the circumstances around me. May I walk forward with confidence, knowing that you hold me in your care. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
