For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. - Romans 15:4 NIV
Winston Churchill is credited with saying, “Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.” We are wise to look at past events over the ages to make better decisions today. For Churchill, following WWII, the lessons to be learned were about fascism, nationalism, aggression, and genocide. But, we can look back in history at other events at other times and discover there really isn’t anything new. In other words, it’s all been done before.
The Bible is an excellent source of wisdom. It is, after all, God’s divine word given to chosen people over time. When we read and meditate upon the sacred scriptures, God continues to impart wisdom and understanding. Sometimes it is the insight into the human condition, the trials, and struggles of the past saints. Their situations may have been different, but the pain and suffering are the same. Also, the same is God’s promise to deliver. It is our faith in that promise that gives hope to the Christian believer.
God, of hope, we give you thanks for your divine word and the hope offered in its pages. Please help us look to it for wisdom in all decisions. Let us be prayerful in its reading and listen to the Holy Spirit for discernment and follow it with action. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
