Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life.
Proverbs 22:4 NIV
We have all heard of expressions like someone having an "inflated ego, or "big-headed." Before these terms became popular vocabulary, the idea of arrogance existed. In Genesis, the serpent perpetuates this idea by telling Eve that eating the fruit will make them like God.
The truth of the matter is many of us sometimes have trouble with humility. Our natural tendency is to share "our" successes, thinking they are solely the results of our actions. However, the minute we begin taking credit for what God has done, we enter upon dangerous ground. Everything we have, all our gifts, our from God. He desires us to use those gifts to his glory. Therefore, in whatever we do, we need to acknowledge God as the source -- it is Him who works through us. When we come to that knowledge -- setting ourselves aside -- we come to enjoy the fullness of life with Christ.
God, we give you thanks for all of your gifts. We confess we sometimes think our accomplishments are ours alone; we fail to acknowledge your hand. Forgive us; we pray and help us always to give you honor and respect. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
