Humility, Respect, and Righteousness

"Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil." Proverbs 3:7 ESV

From personal experience, I can attest there is nothing quite as embarrassing as having taken a firm stand on something, espousing that view unabashedly. Later, admitting the idea was wrong. Reflecting on those experiences, I realize my view was usually based on personal beliefs, biases, and misinformation. I can also assure you I didn't seek God's guidance in forming my opinion. In retrospect, I am thankful for those lessons learned, but I also wish I would have kept my "wisdom" to myself.

"Be not wise in your own eyes." We have no reason to consider ourselves wise. We should seek wisdom, but not view ourselves to be grander than what we are. In perspective to God, any understanding we have is minute. The best earthly wisdom is to exercise humility and "fear the Lord.". We must respect our omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient God, and seek his guidance. "Turn away from evil." At all times, we need to reject those things that are counter to God. There is much going on in today's world that is counter to God's will. Before taking a stance, we must evaluate the issue in context to the fullness of sacred scripture and spending time on our knees, seeking God's guidance. If we could get the world, even if it were only all Christians, the world would become a more just and compassionate place.

Dear God, we stand in awe of your power, wisdom, and presence. We acknowledge we have often formed opinions and made judgments based solely on our beliefs and biases. We ask your forgiveness for those times we acted without first seeking your guidance. We ask for your help to reject evil and submit our egos to you. Please help us instead to embrace humility and seek your wisdom. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

Blessings!

Pastor Tim
