If You're Happy and You Know It

Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. James 5:13 NIV

You likely remember the song learned as children, "If You're Happy and You Know It."

If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands

If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands

If you're happy and you know it, then your face will surely show it

If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands

The song goes on replacing "clap your hands" with "stomp your feet," then " "shout 'Hurray!'" and finally "do all three." Frowning faces brighten while the song is sung, and by the last verse, smiles and laughter fill the air. The ditty is infectious, as the joy spreads from person to person.

It's doubtful James knew this song–it's not that old–but he certainly understood the sentiment. To celebrate with glee for no other reason than we are God's chosen, as we lift our hearts in gratitude and praise simply because we are loved.

Remembering that joy, pick your favorite gospel song, and sing in worship today. Or turn on K-Love (Boston 107.3) and harmonize. Raise your hands, tap your feet, or heaven forbid Methodists, do a little jig-dance before God like King David in his undies. Praise with delight in Jesus Christ. Go out into the world with a big smile on your face and love in your heart. Let others know your happiness, and be infectious for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

If you need help to think of a song immediately, try this one to get started. It's guaranteed to put a smile on your face and joy in your heart. Here’s the first verse and chorus; this link will take you to country artist Alan Jackson’s rendition of "When We All Get to Heaven."

Sing the wondrous love of Jesus,

Sing His mercy and His grace;

In the mansions, bright and blessed

He'll prepare for us a place.

When we all get to Heaven,

What a day of rejoicing that will be!

When we all see Jesus,

We'll sing and shout the victory!

God, thank you for your grace. We are quick to come to you in our times of trouble but confess we are slower to praise you. Right now, we are singing songs of joy. We are lifting paise to you because you are our awesome and loving God. May the joy in our hearts be infectious. Let those we meet today see your reflection in our faces, and may they hear your love in our voices. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Joy & Blessings,

Pastor Tim

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
