Instruction, Acceptance, and Wisdom

"Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom for the future." Proverbs 19:20 NRSV

Have you had someone in your life you turned to for wisdom and advice? My Grandpa Sam was that person for me. He is what you would call a self-made man. Starting from humble beginnings, he worked hard for everything he had and learned all he could in doing so. He was a great reader and stayed current on world events and business practice changes. A source of good advice on many topics, in 1979, before enrolling in college, he advised me to study computers. At that time, most people knew very little about computers, or if they did, it was to fear them. But, I took his sound advice, and it was a field that kept me employed until my retirement.

In God, we find spiritual wisdom. The only person we can turn to who has answers to all our questions. Through the Holy Spirit, he provides us with the guidance we desperately seek. First, however, we need to be willing to accept God's instruction. Just because we don't like the answer, or feel it is too difficult, doesn't mean it's not good advice. From experience, we know sometimes the best lessons come from things that aren't easy. In our challenges, even our failings, we gain eternal wisdom.

Heavenly Father, we give you thanks for the wisdom found in you. Please help us today to listen to your instructions and be obedient to your will. We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus the Christ. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
