"and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
Philippians 2:11 ESV
It is probably safe to say most of us are somewhat skeptical. As children, we are born naive, but somewhere along the way, we learn that not everything is as it appears. Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny are not real. Sadly, we discover that people aren't always honest, and groups twist facts and data to meet their agendas. Through often painful learning experiences, we become doubters.
While most people may know something of Jesus, that may not accept his divinity and that he is Lord. To believe that God would humble himself to dwell among us, we must overcome our natural skepticism and doubt. To confess that Jesus Christ is Lord - the supreme ruler of our spiritual and physical lives - can only happen through faith. While we can no longer see Jesus, we can read his instructions, teachings, and miracles. By accepting him, we can feel him at work within us.
As Christians, we also believe Christ will come again. When that happens, the doubt will be replaced by undeniable truth, "every tongue will confess." There's no need to wait until some future time; we don't know when that will be. Christ extends the invitation to all to believe in him today. He offers us the promise of salvation. All it takes is that acceptance and confession that he is Lord.
God, we give thanks for your Son Jesus. We believe:
He was born of a virgin.
He is the Messiah spoken of in the Old Testament.
He is divine.
He willingly offered his life as an atonement for our sins.
He conquered the grave.
He is the Lord of our lives.
Help us this day to share our faith with others. Amen.
